The World Cup is inspiration to kids globally as they look to their favorite teams and athletes competing in the pinnacle of football. Unfortunately many of those same kids are facing life consuming struggles that don't provide them the luxury of playing their favorite sport. Young footballers in Soweto, South Africa get to partake in something special with the opening of a world class training facility created by Nike. Every year 20,000 kids will have the opportunity to develop and hone their skills here. INCREDIBLE! As well, they will also be granted access to expert training by internationally renowned South African footballers. The centre also aims to educate young people about HIV/AIDS through life skills programmes. In conjunction with that, a permanent blood testing clinic has been set up at the premises, which follows Nike’s partnership with (RED) through the “Lace Up, Save Lives” campaign.
Day 1

The airport is full of them - mini travelers off to see new places. In our case, it's Brazil and our little citizen is traveling for the first time. This is the start of a series of travel vignettes detailing Emilia's (nicknamed Mimi) trip to see an amazing land; it's where half of her family calls home.

As a new Mom, this is the initiation into the adventures of traveling with children. So for now it's going good: She is sleeping and the flight left on time.

Things that are working:

1. Chico Capri Umbrella Stroller. It's cheap, chic, and uber practical.

2. Faux Le Sport Sac Duffle Bag. I bought it for $15 on Canal street in NYC 4 years ago. It fits all her stuff: toys, books, change of clothes and diapers. Plus a change of clothes and a few other necessities for me. I like that it has a whimsical pattern perfect for a voyage.

3. Jujube Diaper Bag. All her food stuff and her personal changing pad is neatly packed. It converts into a backpack for easy carrying.

4. Exploring the airport tired her out so she slipped into a nap during takeoff. We lifted the binky moratorium so she has her soother and an aid for eliminating ear pressure.

Where We Are Off To

Porto Alegre is our final destination. It's the fourth largest city in Brazil with a progressive streak, has a thriving little film, music and arts scene - lots of cool people giving parenting a go.

Mimi now joins the club of little citizens making their way around the globe. Next stop Houston where we will catch our almost ten hour flight to São Paulo. Plus one more connection till we arrive at our destination. Her adventures begin!

Day 2

Sunday Stroll

Today was a true Sunday in all sense of the word. Porto Alegre slows
its pace and most everyone spends it with family.

Mimi had a good night sleep. We are staying in a french hotel chain
that specializes in modern flats with kitchenettes. It is perfect if
you are traveling with a baby; they have clean playpens for little
ones to sleep in and you can prepare small meals.

In the afternoon we went for a stroll and had lunch in a small
homestyle cooking restaurant. We are so fortunate that Mimi is a fan
of black beans and rice since it's the staple for brazilian cuisine.
We had a great meal with collard greens, aipim (which is cooked yuca),
and Brazilian-style grilled meats. And all the staff were coming over
to say hi to Mimi. Brazilians love babies and children; they are
welcomed everywhere.

While we were there a character came in and sat behind us to drink a
beer. He had long hair, a beige coat and leather pants - he was
probably about sixty. He turned around and saw Mimi: he told us he was
a circus clown. He recited a poem to her, finished his beer and left.

We finished our stroll to my cousin's flat and had café da tarde. It
was a perfect Sunday stroll.

Stay tuned!

On occasion when HWKs comes up in discussion, some variation of this question is presented, "what qualifies [a parent as] a 'hipster'"? There are many, um, interesting definitions of hipster, but one of my favorites is the Wikipedia definition "Hipster (contemporary subculture) is a slang term that first appeared in the 1940s, and was revived in the 1990s and 2000s often to describe types of young, *recently-settled urban middle class adults* [I like to call special attention to this] and older teenagers with interests in non-mainstream fashion and culture, particularly alternative music, independent rock...". I interpret this as hipsters are responsibile for a majority of trend forecasting and a good measure for adaptation. Which reminded me of this video, (hipsters generally love history and vintage films btw, so combine the two, winning combo), in which designers in the 1930's were challenged to design for the future (2000's) of 'cool' in fashion, watch it and wait for it "oooh swish!"

For HWKs, the namesake is a positive dedication to an indie, urban, creative and style conscious demographic of individuals coming together, ahem, to make beautiful families. We believe what makes you people most 'hip' is that you are familiarizing your children with acute values and aesthetics for fasion, music, art, architecture, and associated forging-new-paths culture. And all the while preserving a sense of self identity. Using the word hipster, a word with often negative connotations, was intentional to call attention to this amazing societal movement and amplify the spirit of 'hipster' which is, at it's core, cool. And because coolcreativeparentswhovalueartandculturewithrefinedaesthetictaste.com was too long and not as catchy. And in case you are feeling like you might need to inject more cool into your life, take heed from the list below which we found on one of our fav sources Wunderbuzz, who found it on another blog, which in and of itself is a cool thing to do.

It's tough raisin' em' up right. Ian (dubbed above 'This Guy') does it everyday day as a Principal of Wexley School for Girls. Not to be confused with an actual school for girls because there are boys too, and it's not actually a school, but you can learn a lot while you are there. Have I lost you yet? Short slang termed 'Wexley' is an advertising agency, a purveyor of the new way. If Willy Wonka were to acquire an ad agency this might be it, creative without a glass ceiling and there are rubber chickens hanging in the front window of their compound. Really. With a roster of young creative peeps - art directors, copywriters, producers, strategists - he's immersed in the new/it/rad on a daily basis. Ian is also a proud dad to two adorbs boys. Though, he and his wife keep it real (Ian pointed out in interest of total transparency they have some Pottery Barn furniture) making sure to inspire and encourage their boys to foster individual creativity so they're adept for the brave new world. Read on as Ian did his best to field my banter and gave solid answers about what the heck is going to happen next, Wexley using it's popularity for good by educating others, and how to get innovative with the due diligence of parenting.

You and I scheduled a meeting via Twitter for this interview! I have never done this before. Your job is to be one step ahead of the what's-cool curve and adapt progressive ways to communicate, how do you think the 'next generation' will respond (adapt/exploit/shun) to social media?

A: My feeling is that the next generation will look at social media like our generation looks at the telephone land line. There will probably be some things that are still consistent with how social media works now, but it will evolve like everything else does and when people look back at how we are doing things today it will probably seem a bit silly. My guess is that technology will change dramatically and this will change how the media becomes social. For example if we can cam on our phones, will we need to text? Or if you can send a hologram of yourself, do you need to actually go anywhere and use GPS or will there be a Social Media hologram component? I’ve already seen where you can watch a 3D football game on TV and have your social network involved as you watch. I believe the next generation will have more ways of communicating and all of them will be richer experiences visually and technologically.

Miss school miss out. More about the class, Wexley is embracing the interest surrounding the innovative work your agency continues to offer, sharing what 'advertising' , at it's basic core, is all about. Which is rad. Hw/Ks motto is sharing is caring, what was the initiative to educate others about the current landscape of the advertising industry?

A: We were asked to teach an intro to advertising class by Larry Asher at the School of Visual Concepts. Larry and I had discussed the fact that advertising is really different than when I was getting into it and that an intro class really should set people up for the realities of what the industry was all about now. For a lot of people advertising still represents print, television and radio ads and maybe online banners, but now it is so much more that we thought we better teach that. And Larry agreed. We had no desire to watch student after student show print ad after print ad in each class, knowing they would probably not be doing a lot of print ads in their careers anymore. The initiative came from us wanting to see schools teaching the new talent in the advertising industry what is really going on so they are better prepared when they get out of school.

You have a lot of inspiring people with informed interests working for you, what do you continue to learn from them?

A: They keep me on my toes. From all of these diverse talented people I learn things that keep me feeling young. Or make me feel really old, depending on the day. I feel like I am always learning different things from new music, to new social networks, to new places to travel, to new creative ways to approach a problem. I love all of the different perspectives and points of view people bring to the table here, even if I don’t personally agree with all of them.

You're a creative professional, do you consider yourself a creative parent? How so?

A: Well, I don’t know if I am that creative as far as parenting. I can’t really build anything. I suck with tools. So, I have never built that really rad tree house or fort or something I wish I could have built. My wife is actually way better at doing really cool, creative stuff for them. My best creative parenting example was the way I did each of our boys' birth announcements. For my older son, I sent out a weight loss announcement (The Zachary Cohen Diet! Guaranteed to lose 7.5 lbs!) And for Max my second I did a Pick the real Max Riley Cohen, where you could pick his picture out of several other look alikes like Yoday and Captain Stubbing etc. Right now, my creative parenting revolves more around how I can creatively get them to eat vegetables and take a bath or inspire them to be creative in their lives. They both love to read and write, so I encourage that to be creative as much as possible. My older son showed me some Wexley School for Girls ads he did for me and they were awesome, including the Wexley bra. So I think the encouragement is working.

Can you recommend....

Proceed with caution, you'll want to play these songs on repeat. Favorites - the song Magic Arrow by Timbre Timbre is a perfect soundtrack for playing cowboys and indians, playing nice though, like plant seeds together in the backyard garden. And Kids by Sleigh Bells sounds like a fierce game of hopscotch. Other fresh tracks include new releases from The Ruby Suns and LCD Soundsystem.
Over 125 kids from various areas of Boston city worked with artist Caleb Neelon to help create his latest project "Signs and Symbols" now on display at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. The amazing mosaic was created from artwork made by children during after-school programs and community organizations led by Caleb exploring text and it's applications throughout history. My friend Laura shared this with me, noting that this woulda "blown her mind" when she was younger should she have had the opportunity to express her love for words this way.

Up where the air is clear

Flying a kite is liberating. It can also be a great way to introduce your kids to the idea of wind power and what it means to our future as an alternative energy source.

The handbound book, FLY ME, by Yoko Ono is designed to unfold to become a 30x36" kite. The pages bear individual messages of inspiration, such as "Imagine Peace" and "Fly", designed to attached to a hand-carved frame fashioned of oak from a sustainable forest in New York State. Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace Library is the publisher of the 2,500 books available for purchase.

On the DIY tip, FLY ME sparked reference of a great project I was recently introduced too, KiteBot. Their mission is to develop low cost, low complexity kite-based wind energy and the site offers (in their words) a fairly in-depth description of a (fairly) concrete implementation designed to be as simple as possible, but extensible, using mostly bicycle parts.
